The basic name is Berto which is often a diminutive form of several Christian names such as Alberto, Lamberto, Roberto and Umberto. Most of these names are Germanic in origin.
However Berto may actually derive directly from a seventh century Germanic Christian name that is not a diminutive. Indeed, the Latinized form, Bertus, was already in use in Italy during the following century. At its root is the Germanic adjective bertha which means "bright, illustrious, famous".
